Freedom in nature
The pandemic made Norwegians turn to nature in even greater numbers than before. The outdoors give people room to breathe amidst the daily grind.
Outdoor pursuits have been a priority for The GC Rieber Foundations for a number of years. We are working with more than 200 volunteers across 13 different teams. Their efforts have made many parts of the mountains surrounding Bergen accessible to large sections of the public.
Picnic sites with benches, huts, fire pits and shelters have become popular meeting places for schools, kindergartens and people of all ages.
The volunteers feel a great sense of public duty and have extensive professional experience. Their enthusiasm and interests have helped build and maintain bridges, footpaths and roads, tree services and signposts.
Volunteering is a win-win situation in many ways: the teams become social networks for the participants, they keep physically fit and make an outstanding contribution to the community.
